Diffusion, viscoelasticity and erosion: Analytical study and medical applications

چکیده
Abstract: In this paper diffusion through a viscoelastic biodegradable material is studied. The phenomenon is described by a set of three coupled partial differential equations that take into account passive diffusion, stress driven diffusion and the degradation of the material. The stability properties of the model are studied. Erodible viscoelastic materials, as biodegradable polymers, have a huge range of applications in medicine to make drug eluting implants. Using the mathematical model the behaviour of a particular ocular drug eluting implant which describes drug delivery into the vitreous chamber of the eye is presented. The model consists of coupled systems of partial differential equations linked by interface conditions. The chemical structure, the viscoelastic properties and the diffusion in the implant as well as the transport in the vitreous are taken into account to simulate the evolution in vivo of released drug. The dependence of the delivery profile on the properties of the material are addressed. Numerical simulations that illustrate the interplay between these phenomena are included.

Gully erosion is one of the geomophological phenomenon that causes numerous losses to farmland, rangeland, roads, and increased sediment rate. Recognition of the causes and modeling gully erosion has an important role in watershed management, which aids in preventing the destruction of lands in sustainable development. In this research, a gully erosion map was prepared with the use of airp...
متن کاملDerivation of an Analytical Solution to a Reaction-Diffusion Model for Autocatalytic Degradation and Erosion in Polymer Microspheres
A mathematical reaction-diffusion model is defined to describe the gradual decomposition of polymer microspheres composed of poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) that are used for pharmaceutical drug delivery over extended periods of time. The partial differential equation (PDE) model treats simultaneous first-order generation due to chemical reaction and diffusion of reaction products in s...

Introduction: To examine the hypothesis that diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) in lumbosacral region could reveal sciatic nerve course swelling that lead to lower extremity pain. The aim of present article was to find and evaluate the diffusion weighted coefficients (b-values) for scrutinizing sciatic nerve tract changes in lumbosacral region. Materials and methods: Lumbar area was imaged in 30...

In this paper, the finite element analysis of two-dimensional linear viscoelastic problems is performed using quadrilateral complex Fourier elements and, the results are compared with those obtained by quadrilateral classic Lagrange elements. Complex Fourier shape functions contain a shape parameter which is a constant unknown parameter adopted to enhance approximation’s accuracy. Since the iso...
